What a night. The Hills Big Band had a near capacity audience for our gig at the Ellington Jazz Club Wed 5th April. New vocalist Cathy Mueller was thrown in at the deep end leading off the show with a rendition of Michael Buble's Fever. The trumpet section managed to survive the introduction of Doc Severinsens version of Sing Sing Sing, while drummer Julian Osbourne also had the saucepans rattling. Guitarist Bob Emery had his fingers flying in a nice guitar break on Rockabily number Jump Jive and Wail. Sam Jones yet again pulled out a nice solo on Mondays child but this time on a flugel horn (Courtesy of the Mundaring Community Bank). The first set was rounded out with the old latin number Mambo No5 (it sounds easy but it is a challenge). A highlight of the second set was a new number Sandunga, an Arturo Sandoval latin piece, featured on extended solos were John Perry piano, Heni Kaspi alto sax and Ed Mickuki bass trombone. This really was a latin night with a mambo version of Ellingtons Perdido following on. Vocalists Lenny Twigg and Cathy Mueller provided some fine vocal stylings on standards Orange Coloured Sky, Fly me to the moon, Night and Day, Mr Zoot Suit and Over the Rainbow. Lenny rounding out the evening with New York, New York (after being rescued from the bar). Maestro Kieran Hurley was in top form again on the segways (I'm sure a stand up career beckons), made even more amazing due to the fact he had dropped a guitar amp on his big toe that very morning and was in some pain (Oh! that,s why he was waving his arms around on stage).

A great afternnoon of swing and Jazz. The Hills Big Band as promised offered up some new numbers to their audience. Notably a couple of latin instrumentals Sandunga and Mambo No5. Another new number, a beautiful instrumental called Mondays Child featured a great solo by trumpet player Sam Jones. The band did a valiant job of coping with the heat from the panoramic window. Commiserations to those of the band on the back row who needed towel downs after the gig.
