SWING FOR ALL AGES CONCERT - HILLS BIG BAND
The Hills Big Band are performing a series of concerts for Seniors residing in managed accommodation. Taking musical events to people who can no longer get out and about.
Baptist Care organisation were the first to utilize the HBB and a concert was performed for Baptist Care’s ‘Yallambee’ home in Mundaring on the 16th June 2019.
Mundaring Community Bank (Bendigo) kindly stepped in with a sponsorship for expenses that enabled the concert to take place.
Music director Kieran Hurley led the Hills Big Band through two 45 minutes sets while also trying his hand at playing the second trumpet parts. With president John Perry claiming the prize for the most misplaced charts.
After some initial feedback volume adjustments to cater for the residents, the band settled down to play in some unfamiliar dynamic territory.
The mainly standards set list featured vocals by Cathy Mueller and Nick Trease . Nick tried his hand at being MC and at one point encouraged our elderly audience to get up and dance. (Kieran took credit for coaching Nick in this regard.)
Featured were vocal numbers made famous by Peggy Lee, Natalie Cole, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Michael Buble with instrumentals limited to Satin Doll, Little Sunflower, Walk Don’t Run and At the Oasis.
A very appreciative audience, supplemented by relatives of the residents, gave the band a warm welcome, prompting requests for a return performance if possible. Overall a most enjoyable time was had by all involved.
A big thank you to the staff of the Yallambee Home who laid on refreshments for the afternoon and worked hard to enable the smooth running of the concert.
The Baptist Care/Hills Big Band partnership is still holding out hope of funding from a government agency for a series of concerts which would take place in other homes.
